Menopause and ageing change our body composition. Our bodies break down muscle faster, and have greater resistance to building muscle from the protein we eat.A high protein diet and regular resistance training form the foundations of healthy muscle growth and maintenance.Research suggests that women should aim for > 1.2g of protein per kg of body weight per day to reduce risk of frailty. For a 70kg woman, this is 84g of protein per day (equivalent to 13 eggs). Other studies have demonstrated the positive effect of a high protein diet on increasing the lean muscle to body fat ratio. Other notable research highlights the positive effect of a high protein, low energy diet on weight loss.
